Getting What We Deserve: Health and Medical Care in America

"Getting What We Deserve- Health and Medical Care in America" by Alfred Sommer offers a personal yet evidence-based examination of the factors influencing health in the United States. The book critiques the overemphasis on biological causes of disease, highlighting the significant roles of behavior, society, and economic factors. Sommer contrasts the high cost of U.S. healthcare with its comparatively poorer health outcomes compared to other developed nations. He explores various aspects of the healthcare system, including payment models, the influence of market forces, and disparities in access and health status. Ultimately, the book advocates for a more rational, equitable, and effective approach to health and medical care in America, emphasizing the importance of public health measures and addressing preventable causes of illness.
