Geopolitics in Health: Confronting Obesity, AIDS, and Tuberculosis in the Emerging BRICS Economies

This Book, Geopolitics in Health: Confronting Obesity, AIDS, and Tuberculosis in the Emerging BRICS Economies, examines how Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (the BRICS nations) have addressed the epidemics of obesity, AIDS, and tuberculosis. The author, Eduardo J. Gómez, analyzes the different policy responses of these nations, highlighting the variations in their political commitment and societal safeguarding. The text explores the influence of geopolitics and international reputation building as key factors shaping these responses, often more significantly than domestic pressures. Gómez utilizes a comparative case study approach, drawing on qualitative and quantitative data, including interviews and archival materials, to understand the effectiveness of centralized versus decentralized health policy in these diverse settings. Ultimately, the work assesses whether the BRICS have truly emerged as leaders in public health, considering their varying degrees of success in implementing effective and sustained strategies against these major health challenges.
