Galen and the Rhetoric of Healing

This scholarly work, "Galen and the Rhetoric of Healing," examines the writings of the ancient physician Galen, not as straightforward medical fact, but as narratives shaped by social context and rhetorical strategies. The author argues that Galen's case histories reveal his perceptions of his professional role, his relationships with patients and rivals, and the agonistic atmosphere of the Second Sophistic. By analyzing these stories, the book explores how Galen presented himself and his medical practice within the cultural landscape of the Roman Empire, considering his audience and the literary traditions of the time, including Hippocratic case histories. Ultimately, the study focuses on Galen's subjective experience and how he constructed his accounts of healing encounters.
