From Warfare to Welfare: Defense Intellectuals and Urban Problems in Cold War America

This academic work, "From Warfare to Welfare," explores the post-World War II efforts to apply defense and aerospace innovations to address urban problems in American cities. It examines how concepts and technologies like systems analysis, computer simulations, and satellite reconnaissance, initially developed for military purposes, were transferred and adapted for urban planning and management. The text details the involvement of "defense intellectuals"—civilian experts—and institutions like RAND in this transfer, highlighting both the initial enthusiasm and the eventual challenges and limited successes of these efforts in cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Pittsburgh. Furthermore, the book investigates the underlying motivations and the lasting legacy of this intersection between national security concerns and domestic urban development.
