From Muslim to Christian Granada: Inventing a City's Past in Early Modern Spain

This academic work examines the invention of Granada's Christian past in the early modern period, particularly focusing on the discovery of lead books and relics on the Sacromonte in the late sixteenth century. It analyzes how these controversial finds were used to construct a new civic identity that emphasized Granada's ancient Christian origins, often marginalizing the city's more recent Muslim heritage. The study explores the roles of religious and civic leaders, intellectuals, and popular piety in promoting and contesting the authenticity and significance of these materials. Furthermore, it investigates how rituals, urban development, and artistic representations contributed to shaping Granada's self-perception as a fundamentally Christian city.
