From Madman to Crime Fighter: The Scientist in Western Culture

This academic work, "From Madman to Crime Fighter: The Scientist in Western Culture," explores the evolving representation of scientists in Western literature and film from the 13th century to the present. The book examines how cultural myths and societal attitudes have shaped the image of the scientist, tracing a trajectory from figures like the mad alchemist to more contemporary portrayals, including heroes and morally ambiguous characters. It analyzes how historical, social, and political contexts influenced these depictions, including the impact of scientific advancements, religious beliefs, and fears about technology. Ultimately, the study reveals the complex and often unflattering stereotypes that have persisted alongside society's dependence on scientific progress, highlighting a long-standing ambivalence towards the scientific figure.
