From Hitler's Germany to Saddam's Iraq: The Enduring False Promise of Preventive War

This Book, "From Hitler’s Germany to Saddam’s Iraq: The Enduring False Promise," examines the historical recurrence of the preventive war temptation by analyzing key events like Hitler's reoccupation of the Rhineland in 1936 and the 2003 invasion of Iraq. The author, Scott A. Silverstone, argues that despite its intuitive appeal, preventive war often fails to achieve its long-term security goals and can even generate negative consequences. The book analyzes historical case studies to explore the strategic logic and potential pitfalls of initiating conflict based on anticipated future threats, highlighting the inherent uncertainty of predicting the future and the paradoxical risks associated with preventive action. Ultimately, the work underscores the complexity of addressing security dilemmas and cautions against the allure of seemingly decisive solutions like preventive war.
