From Enforcers to Guardians: A Public Health Primer on Ending Police Violence

"From Enforcers to Guardians: A Public Health Primer on Ending Police Violence" by Hannah L. F. Cooper and Mindy Thompson Fullilove examines police violence in the United States as a critical public health issue, highlighting its disproportionate impact on marginalized communities. The authors trace the historical roots of distorted policing, connecting it to societal factors like marginalization and economic shifts. They argue that excessive force and brutality undermine public health and societal unity, advocating for a shift towards a "guardianship" model of policing. The book analyzes various forms of police violence, including physical, sexual, psychological, and neglectful, often documented through Department of Justice investigations. Ultimately, it proposes a multi-level "magic strategy" involving systemic changes, community engagement, and addressing the underlying social determinants of health to achieve lasting reform and true public safety for all.
