Four Guardians: A Principled Agent View of American Civil-Military Relations

"Four Guardians: A Principled Agent View of American Civil-Military" explores the intricate relationship between the U.S. military and its civilian leadership. The book examines this dynamic through the lens of principled agent theory, considering factors beyond traditional agency models. It analyzes the distinct cultures of the Navy, Marine Corps, Army, and Air Force, highlighting how their unique beliefs and histories shape their interactions with civilian policymakers. The text uses case studies, such as the creation of the Rapid Deployment Joint Task Force and the passage of the Goldwater-Nichols Act, to illustrate how these service cultures influence military compliance and strategic debates. Ultimately, the work seeks to foster a deeper understanding of the civil-military dynamic by appreciating the individual perspectives of each service.
