Fortune's Faces: The Roman de la Rose and the Poetics of Contingency

This scholarly work investigates the concept of "contingency" as it manifests in the Roman de la Rose. It traces the philosophical history of contingency from Aristotle through medieval thinkers like Boethius, examining its implications for language, truth, and divine knowledge. The author argues that the Roman de la Rose explores contingency through its structure, characters like Fortune, and the ambiguous "I" of the narrative. Ultimately, the study posits that the poem's poetics are deeply intertwined with the philosophical problem of contingency, presenting a "language of contingency" in its form and content.
