Flawed Logics: Strategic Nuclear Arms Control from Truman to Obama

"Flawed Logics" explores the history of U.S. strategic nuclear arms control from Truman to Obama, arguing that flawed reasoning often underpinned policy decisions. The author contends that both proponents and opponents of arms control relied on incomplete or illogical arguments, hindering effective agreements. The book examines specific treaties and proposals, highlighting the influence of beliefs about Soviet intentions and the challenges of verification. It emphasizes how domestic politics and bureaucratic dynamics shaped U.S. negotiating positions. The text also considers how changing assessments of the Soviet/Russian threat impacted arms control efforts over time. Ultimately, the author calls for humility and civility in addressing the ongoing challenges of nuclear arms control.
