Financing the Athenian Fleet: Public Taxation and Social Relations

This academic work investigates the Athenian system of financing its substantial naval fleets, particularly during the classical period. The study examines the public taxation and social mechanisms that enabled Athens to maintain its maritime power. It scrutinizes the trierarchy, a key institution involving wealthy citizens in funding and often commanding warships, analyzing its financial burdens, qualifications, and evolution. The author draws upon inscriptions, literary sources, and recent scholarship to offer a fresh perspective on Athenian fleet finance and its broader societal implications. Ultimately, the book aims to stimulate further research and debate on this important aspect of ancient naval history and Athenian society.
