Film Adaptation and Its Discontents: From Gone with the Wind to The Passion of the Christ

This collection of excerpts explores the multifaceted relationship between literary works and their film adaptations. It examines how adaptations are influenced by critical theories, cultural contexts, and the distinct characteristics of both literature and cinema. The text discusses various approaches to adaptation, ranging from attempts at fidelity to more radical reinterpretations and the emergence of post-literary adaptations from other media. Furthermore, it analyzes the concept of the director as auteur in adaptation and investigates the complexities of adapting canonical texts like Shakespeare, Dickens, and even the Gospels. Finally, it considers the implications of claiming a film is "based on a true story" and its connection to textual authority.
