Experimental Life: Vitalism in Romantic Science and Literature

This academic Book investigates the concept of "experimental vitalism" in Romantic science and literature. It explores the historical and conceptual specificity of this term compared to broader notions of vitalism, emphasizing its connection to experimental practices emerging in the late seventeenth century. The author examines how experimental vitalism, unlike earlier forms, became a collective endeavor shaped by social systems. The work also analyzes the relationship between experimental vitalism and politics, artistic experimentation, and phenomena like suspended animation. Furthermore, it explores the interplay between literature, science, and philosophy in understanding life, media, and bodily experiences such as nausea and digestion. The author contrasts various thinkers, including Lamarck, Saumarez, and Hegel, to understand the nuances of media theories and artistic expression in the Romantic era. Ultimately, the text aims to historicize and re-evaluate contemporary interests in vitalist concepts by highlighting their Romantic-era origins.
