Ex Oriente Lex: Near Eastern Influences on Ancient Greek and Roman Law

These excerpts explore the profound influence of ancient Near Eastern legal traditions on ancient Greek and Roman law. Legal concepts and practices, such as homicide laws, royal power, dowries, and debt release, are traced from Mesopotamian and biblical sources to their manifestations in Homeric Greece and early Rome. The texts challenge the notion that Roman law developed in isolation, suggesting instead a shared legal heritage across the ancient Mediterranean world. Authors examine specific legal problems and phrases, demonstrating how Near Eastern legal thought shaped the formal structures and intellectual underpinnings of Western legal systems. Furthermore, the texts analyze the nature of ancient law codes, arguing that they served as both a source of law and a reflection of the scientific and intellectual traditions of their time. The research illustrates a complex interplay of cultural exchange and adaptation in the development of legal systems across the ancient world.
