Euripides, Freud, and the Romance of Belonging

This Book examines the concept of "belonging" through the lenses of Euripides' Ion and Freud's psychoanalytic theories, specifically "From the History of an Infantile Neurosis." The author investigates how both texts grapple with themes of abandonment, identity, and the construction of origin stories. It analyzes how these narratives reveal anxieties surrounding belonging and the ways in which societies and individuals manage these anxieties through redefinition and reconstruction. The work scrutinizes the roles of family, particularly mothers and fathers, and explores the economic and social dimensions intertwined with the sense of belonging. Furthermore, it considers how audiences engage with these narratives and how the act of repetition reinforces the trauma associated with identity formation. Ultimately, the text explores how these literary and psychoanalytic works illuminate the complex and often unstable nature of belonging.
