Estrangement and the Somatics of Literature: Tolstoy, Shklovsky, Brecht

This academic work examines the concept of estrangement, particularly in the context of literature and somatics. It analyzes the theories of Tolstoy, Shklovsky, and Brecht, exploring how art can disrupt or reinforce societal norms. The study considers the role of emotions, feelings, and bodily experiences in shaping our understanding of the world and regulating social behavior. It investigates how these authors believed art can "infect" audiences with new perspectives or manipulate them through emotional identification. Furthermore, the piece argues that the theories around estrangement involves a process of becoming for example, body-becoming-mind or emotional-becoming-mental. Ultimately, the author offers a critical analysis of how estrangement functions as a tool for both personal and ideological transformation.
