Jonathan Rosenbaum's "Essential Cinema: On the Necessity of Film Canons" explores the concept of film canons and their importance in combating studio publicity and promoting diverse cinematic voices. The book critiques traditional approaches to canonization and champions alternate strategies, such as reevaluating classics and including overlooked works. Rosenbaum analyzes a wide array of films, from well-known masterpieces to lesser-known and controversial titles, examining their artistic, cultural, and political significance. He challenges conventional critical perspectives, questioning the influence of market forces and advocating for a more inclusive and informed understanding of cinematic history. The work encourages readers to actively participate in shaping film canons and resisting reductive interpretations. The text presents essays that address the necessity of film canons, the problem of historical amnesia in cinema, and examinations of a wide array of filmmakers, including Welles, Hitchcock, and Dovzhenko.
