Epic in American Culture: Settlement to Reconstruction

This Book explores the concept of the epic in American culture, from early exploration narratives to later literary and artistic expressions. It examines how the idea of the epic evolved and was adapted by American writers and artists in the context of national identity and cultural development. The study analyzes various works, including literature, paintings, and even the U.S. Constitution, to demonstrate the diffusion and transformation of epic themes and forms. The material covers a wide range of authors and artists, from Timothy Dwight and Joel Barlow to Herman Melville and Walt Whitman, revealing diverse approaches to engaging with and redefining the epic tradition. The text shows that the American use of "epic" went beyond mere imitation, becoming a dynamic expression of national aspirations, anxieties, and cultural negotiations.
