Ephemeral Bibelots: How an International Fad Buried American Modernism

Brad Evans's Ephemeral Bibelots: How an International Fad Buried American Modernism examines the largely forgotten vogue for small, independent literary magazines ("bibelots") in the 1890s America. The book argues that these publications, heavily influenced by Parisian avant-garde movements, significantly impacted American Modernism, despite their brief lifespans and limited circulation. Evans explores the international exchange of ideas, imagery, and styles among these magazines, tracing connections across national borders through citational practices. He analyzes the role of key figures like Gelett Burgess and the relationship between these ephemeral publications and later Modernist movements. The study ultimately challenges the traditional narrative of American literary history, highlighting the importance of these overlooked periodicals.
