Envisioning Black Colleges: A History of the United Negro College Fund

Marybeth Gasman's Envisioning Black Colleges examines the United Negro College Fund (UNCF)'s history, focusing on its fundraising strategies from the 1940s to the 1970s. The book explores how the UNCF, initially reliant on white philanthropists like John D. Rockefeller Jr., navigated racial dynamics and shifting social contexts. Gasman details the UNCF's evolving relationship with white donors and the crucial role of Black leaders in shaping the organization's identity. The study also analyzes how the UNCF responded to major events like Brown v. Board of Education and the Black Consciousness movement, highlighting its impact on fundraising and the ongoing challenges faced by historically Black colleges and universities. Ultimately, the book showcases the complex interplay of philanthropy, race relations, and higher education in America.
