Democracy and the Rise of Women's Movements in Sub-Saharan Africa

This research explores the impact of democratization on women's movements in sub-Saharan Africa, focusing on Ghana. It examines how pre-existing gendered structures and political opportunities influenced women's mobilization, particularly in response to events like serial killings. The study analyzes the roles of women's organizations, government policies, donor agencies, and cultural factors in shaping women's political participation and their efforts to advance women's rights, including a case study of the struggle to pass a domestic violence bill. The research utilizes interviews and survey data to understand the complexities of women's engagement in the formal political process. It also compares Ghana's experience with those of Eastern Europe and Latin America.
