Cut These Words into My Stone: Ancient Greek Epitaphs

Cut These Words Into My Stone: Ancient Greek Epitaphs is a book of newly translated ancient Greek epitaphs, chronologically arranged from 500 BCE to 600 CE. The book features an introduction exploring the evolution of the epitaph from inscription to literary form, noting its connections to epic poetry and the symposium. The translations are presented alongside the original Greek and brief commentary, offering insights into ancient Greek life and culture. Many epitaphs are attributed to famous poets like Sappho and Simonides, though the introduction acknowledges scholarly debates over the authenticity of these attributions. The book concludes with notes, a bibliography, and biographies of the poets.
