Crisis in an Atlantic Empire: Spain and New Spain, 1808-1810

This Book examines the political and economic crises in Spain and its American colonies (particularly New Spain) during the Napoleonic era. It focuses on the events leading up to and following Napoleon's manipulation of the Spanish royal family, including the Aranjuez and Bayonne events. The sources then analyze the resulting uprisings in Spain and the colonies, exploring the interplay between Spanish factions (including European-born merchants and Creoles), colonial juntas, and the British. Finally, the text explores the economic and political ramifications of these events, including the struggle for control of colonial trade and resources and the eventual shift towards independence movements in the Americas.
