Beasts of the Modern Imagination: Darwin, Nietzsche, Kafka, Ernst, and Lawrence

This Book comprises excerpts from Margot Norris's Beasts of the Modern Imagination, which analyzes the work of Darwin, Nietzsche, Kafka, Ernst, and Lawrence. Norris argues that these figures share a "biocentric" perspective, emphasizing instinct and the body over reason and culture. The book examines how their writing subverts traditional anthropocentric views, exploring themes of violence, sexuality, and representation. Norris uses various literary and philosophical lenses to understand these authors' unique approaches and their shared rebellion against conventional thought. Finally, the text provides detailed analyses of specific works by each author, highlighting their techniques and thematic concerns.
