Hoover Commission Denies Islamic Academy, Data Center Threatened
The Hoover Planning and Zoning Commission has recommended denying a request for the Islamic Academy of Alabama and a Muslim prayer center. The decision came after a meeting where around one hundred seventy-five people, mostly opposing the project, voiced their concerns. The proposed zoning change would have allowed the academy to move into Hoovers Meadowbrook Corporate Park. City Planner Mac Martin stated that staff could not make a positive recommendation due to the project not aligning with the citys comprehensive plan and concerns about traffic study and occupancy projections. Lucas Gambrino, representing the school, disputed the citys concerns and issued a warning that if the school proposal was denied, the property owners would sell the building to a data center. Public comments followed, with many residents expressing worries about increased traffic and sharing personal experiences. The commission voted unanimously to forward the request to the city council with a recommendation to deny it. DNN | The Daily News Now! The world’s first global local news network. Every city.
