Alabama's Education Funding Crisis: A Looming Teacher Pay Raise Dilemma

Alabamas Retirement Systems Head Warns of Tough Education Funding Choices in 2026David Bronner, head of Alabamas retirement systems, has warned that the state legislature faces challenging decisions regarding education funding in 2026. This is due to increasing health insurance costs and other pressing financial needs. Recent tax cuts and a new program allowing public funds for private schools will exacerbate the budget strain. Bronner, who has led the Retirement Systems of Alabama since 1973, noted that for the first time in years, lawmakers are seeing more demand for money than they have. This comes after several years of federal pandemic relief funds boosting state budgets, which have now leveled off.The Public Education Employees’ Health Insurance Plan (PEEHIP) is requesting a significant $380 million funding increase for the fiscal year 2027, a 33% jump over the current year, bringing their total request to $1.5 billion. This increase is driven by rising costs of Medicare Advantage plans and higher hospital and medical expenses for active employees. These two years of substantial increases follow a long period of stable funding for the insurance program. The rising health insurance costs will impact whether lawmakers can approve a pay raise for teachers in the 2027 budget. Bronner expressed concern, stating he doesnt expect the legislature to approve new revenue sources to cover these growing expenses. He emphasized that while many good things are happening in public schools, the state faces a significant financial problem. DNN | The Daily News Now! The world’s first global local news network.
