Just a Number

Bill welcomes comedian Doug Phelps and his father David Phelps for a fascinating journey through eight decades of American history. As David approaches his 80th birthday, he shares vivid memories of pivotal moments that shaped our world—from World War II and the Civil Rights Movement to the Kennedy assassination, the Moon landing, and 9/11.

The conversation takes unexpected turns as David, a longtime Elvis impersonator, treats listeners to impromptu performances of The King's classics. When discussing his two hip replacements, the talk shifts to a disturbing story from San Antonio about organ harvesting, leading to an eye-opening discussion about the global organ trade and emerging biotechnology. The trio explores Japan's groundbreaking research using pigs to grow human organs, debating the ethics and possibilities of this scientific frontier—complete with jokes about combining organ transplants with bacon.

Through candid conversation, David reflects on watching technology transform society, shares wisdom he'd give his younger self, and opens up about how today's political climate has affected longtime friendships. This episode brings together three generations for a remarkable discussion about aging, gratitude, and witnessing history unfold. Enjoy this introspective, touching, and surprisingly humorous conversation with a man who's seen it all.
