Badlands Story Hour Ep. 190: 2001: A Space Odyssey
Chris Paul and Burning Bright take on Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, opening with HAL 9000, the secret briefing on the monolith, and the cover story told to the crew at Clavius. The guys dig into why Kubrick's films are so hard to pin down, from Eyes Wide Shut to Full Metal Jacket, and whether you can separate the art from the artist. They listen through Bill Cooper's Mystery Babylon reading of the film, from the Dawn of Man to the rebirth imagery of the Star Child, and ask whether he was onto something or reading too much into it. Burning Bright explains why he likes writing ambiguous endings. Then the conversation turns to HAL and today's AI race: superintelligence, frontier models, data centers, Elon's Colossus, and the clip Elon shared from the sequel 2010. They also get into Trump's rebranding, Trump finally talking about his uncle, and the old claim that Kubrick couldn't make Saturn look right. Next week the movie is Ready or Not.
