Up From Ashes A True Story The Odds Of Love And Hope From Sharon Cameron
Sharon Cameron became inspired to write UP FROM THE ASHES after discovering Selma Engel’s oral history interview on the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s website. She watched it four times, then found Chaim Engel’s interviews, and other survivors discussing the Sobibor death camp, and the uprising that took place there. The history was fascinating, but it was Chaim and Selma, and the hope born from love that they forged together—the hope that helped them survive—that truly inspired her. UP FROM THE ASHES is a work of dramatized fiction. All the events from the book are from eyewitness testimony. All the characters are real, using their real names where known. Sharon Cameron worked closely with the Engel children and grandchildren to make this novel as accurate as it could possibly be. The result is an extraordinarily moving work that celebrates how hope and love can light even the darkest path. More about UP FROM THE ASHES: Sharon Cameron’s latest release traces Selma and Chaim’s story of survival and love alongside the infamous revolt and escape of the Sobibor death camp prisoners, which was the only known successful uprising and mass escape from a death camp. Selma Wijnberg is a criminal, a prisoner. Because she is Jewish. For this crime, in the depths of Hitler's occupation of Holland, Selma is deported to the Sobibor death camp, sentenced to sort the clothes of the dead while a smoke made of thousands blackens the sky. And in the light of this enormous funeral pyre, at the end of a Nazi pistol, Selma is ordered to dance. The hand that offers to dance with her is strong. It belongs to Chaim Engel. Chaim is a Polish Jew and also a prisoner. Chaim and Selma don't speak the same language. But sometimes, love doesn't need a language. But when the prisoners of Sobibor hatch a daring plan of escape, it is time to kill or be killed. In an hour of terror and panic, of bullets and bloodshed, Chaim and Selma discover that hope--and two hands twined tightly together--can be the key to keeping two people alive.
