The New Age Stephen King Licorice From Kara La Reau

LICORICE is a fantastically kid-friendly, light psychological horror about fitting in, standing out, overcoming fear and finding a place called home by award winning author, Kara LaReau. Previously recognized for her chapter book series, LICORICE is her first book for the middle grade audience. Kitty, a young and frightened kitten, finds herself at the Mount Charles Animal Shelter after a storm swept away her forest home and family. It isn’t all bad, though. The shelter has warmth, food, and the overbearing and terrifying presence of Bunny Van Hopper, her cage neighbor. Then, Max appears. Max has a reputation for adopting pets from the shelter and bringing them to his home on 5 Manderley Lane where he gives them a life of kindness and treats. Out of all of the animals at the shelter, Max decides to bring Kitty home. As Kitty is carried off to her new home, she hears Bunny Van Hopper’s bitter cries: “You’re going to regret this! I just know it!” And perhaps Bunny is right… Five Manderley Lane is haunted by a scent of Licorice, from every chair leg, every carpet fiber, every throw pillow, even inside the bathtub. It is the strongest upstairs in Max’s room, almost overpowering. It also doesn’t help that Duchess, the family’s old parrot, won’t let Kitty forget that she is a replacement. Is this just a shadow of the cat who occupied the home before? Or is there really something on the other side of it haunting her?
