Science Nonfiction Behind The Scenes Of University Research With Dr Darren J Lipomi

Every year, the United States invests roughly $60 billion — not quite one percent of the entire federal budget — in university research. Most Americans will never know how that money is spent, who bears the risk when discoveries fail, or what life looks like inside the laboratories where the future is being made. In Science Nonfiction: Behind The Scenes in University Research (Buckland Creek Press: June 1, 2026), scientist and educator Darren J. Lipomi, PhD, draws on two decades of experience inside elite academic institutions — including Harvard and Stanford — to offer a candid account of how American university research really functions. Part memoir, part institutional critique, and part call to action, Science Nonfiction is an insider’s guide to one of America’s most consequential — and least understood — public endeavors. From the exhilarating moments of genuine discovery to the systemic absurdities that slow science down, Lipomi maps the full terrain of a world few are permitted to see. It is essential reading for every citizen who pays taxes and wonders what happens next with that investment as well as for scientists, policymakers and students. Through the lens of his own career trajectory — from modest beginnings to the country’s most prestigious research universities to academic leadership — Lipomi examines how incentives, power dynamics, and institutional politics shape what science gets done, who gets credit, and which ideas are allowed to flourish.
