Bridging The Rivers Of Difference From Dr Catherine Meeks Talks That Connect Us

At a moment when so much of the political conversation is about what divides Americans, Meeks believes we need to get much better at talking about what connects us. That means creating conversations that can cross racial, political, geographic and cultural lines and getting beyond labels long enough to talk about what people actually care about: their families, their communities, safety, opportunity, dignity, faith, education and the kind of country they want their children to inherit. Meeks has spent decades doing this work. She led African American Studies at Mercer University for 25 years, served as executive director of the Absalom Jones Episcopal Center for Racial Healing, and has worked extensively with communities on racial healing and reconciliation. Her work recognizes that real bridge-building is difficult, requires patience, and cannot simply ignore disagreements. Her new book, Bridging the Rivers of Difference: A Proclamation of Unity in Resistance (Morehouse Publishing; June 16, 2026), expands that conversation. Rather than treating Black, Latino, Asian, Indigenous and white Americans as separate constituencies, Meeks asks what happens when people begin recognizing shared humanity and building relationships across the lines that traditionally separate them. The book specifically examines how coalitions can be built across communities that have different histories and experiences.
