Winter Halts Alaska Storm Recovery
Disaster response officials in Western Alaska have suspended most recovery work due to harsh winter conditions following last months catastrophic storm. The storm, remnants of Typhoon Halong, damaged or destroyed over 650 homes and displaced 1600 people. Officials are now focusing on long-term recovery, planning to resume full-scale cleanup and repair next spring and summer. Many groups have been demobilized, but some organizations will continue repair operations as weather permits. More than 640 people remain in Anchorage shelters, with officials working to find longer-term housing. Critical infrastructure in hardest-hit villages remains unreliable, and a committee is forming to coordinate post-winter recovery efforts. DNN | The Daily News Now!
