Unmarked Grave of Civil War Vet Honored in Alaska
Joseph H. White, a Civil War veteran, finally receives recognition with a small US flag and a framed picture at his unmarked grave in Seward, Alaska. Tom Simmons, a member of the Sons of Union Veterans, discovered his burial site through a subtle depression in the ground. A headstone from the US Department of Veterans Affairs will be placed next summer, coinciding with the Declaration of Independence anniversary. This effort honors White and highlights Alaskas connection to broader American history, with the Sons of Union Veterans also working to identify and honor other unmarked veteran graves in Alaska.
