Northern Lights Dazzle US, Solar Maximum in Action

On November 13th, a rare and spectacular display of the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, was visible across much of the United States, from Idaho to New York and even as far south as Florida and Alabama. This phenomenon was caused by strong geomagnetic storms, triggered by two coronal mass ejections from the sun. The storm reached a G4 level, the second highest on NOAAs scale, and forecasters anticipated a third, even stronger CME on Wednesday. This increase in Northern Lights sightings is due to the sun reaching its solar maximum, a period of heightened activity with more eruptions sending more charged particles towards Earth.
