‘Explosion’ of invasive European green crabs reported in Southeast Alaska

European Green Crab Invasion in Southeast Alaska: A Growing Threat to Native Habitats and FisheriesThe European green crab, an invasive species, has been wreaking havoc in Southeast Alaska since its first sighting in July 2022. Originally found in small numbers, the crab population has exploded, with over 40,000 trapped this year alone. These crabs, only about four inches wide, pose a significant threat as they destroy native eelgrass beds and consume juvenile salmon, clams, mussels, and other crabs vital to local fisheries and subsistence. The invasion has spread rapidly, with green crabs now found on and off Annette Island, Gravina, Ketchikan, and Etolin Island.Experts are now focusing on functional eradication instead of total eradication, aiming to protect the most vital fisheries and habitats. However, this approach faces challenges due to the crabs' hardy genetic makeup and the impact of climate change, which warmer water temperatures favor. Communities are preparing for potential future invasions by setting up crab traps and raising awareness through education and local involvement. DNN | The Daily News Now!
