ConocoPhillips Employees Seek Unionization
Employees at ConocoPhillips North Slope oil fields are seeking to form a union, citing concerns over job cuts, rising living costs, and changes in oil industry ownership. The United Steelworkers union has filed a petition for a vote, which would allow around two hundred forty-three employees to create a bargaining unit. ConocoPhillips, however, believes a direct relationship with employees is best and has created a website criticizing the union. The union, in turn, calls this website propaganda. The petition requires signatures from at least thirty percent of employees, and while ConocoPhillips could voluntarily recognize the bargaining unit, the union believes the company is pushing for an election.
