Book review: New memoir covers the long and rich history of the famed flying Wien family in Alaska

The Flying Wiens memoir by Richard Wien, now 90, recounts the family's aviation legacy in Alaska. Noel Wien, Richard's father, co-founded Alaska's first airline with his brother Ralph, connecting remote communities and offering opportunities for Native pilots. Richard and his brother Merrill followed in their father's footsteps, facing the dangers of early aviation. The airline merged with Northern Consolidated Airlines in the 1960s, and Richard started his own helicopter company, participating in dramatic rescues. The memoir celebrates a century of aviation adventures and the enduring family legacy. DNN | The Daily News Now! The world’s first global local news network. Every city. Every story. AI powered.
