Anchorage School District Ponders Elementary School Closures

The Anchorage School District is grappling with the decision to close either Fire Lake or Lake Otis Elementary schools due to low enrollment, with Superintendent Jharrett Bryantt recommending both for closure. The district has seen a significant decrease in student enrollment over the past fifteen years, leading to a budget deficit of over one hundred million dollars. The Rightsizing ASD initiative aims to address this deficit by closing schools, which can save between three hundred thousand and eight hundred thousand dollars annually. The decision is deeply emotional for families and staff, with the district committed to a compassionate and transparent process. DNN | The Daily News Now! The world’s first global local news network.
