Alaska Schools: Emergency Shelters in Crisis

In Alaska, schools, once safe havens, are now emergency shelters facing neglect and underfunding. A recent storm in Kipnuk highlighted the issue, with a schools generator struggling to meet the demand of hundreds of evacuees. Despite their crucial role, only 14% of maintenance requests from rural districts have been approved. As climate change brings more storms, the need for well-maintained school shelters is urgent.
