Alaska Salmon Catch Surges, Profits Plummet

Alaskas commercial salmon fishers had a record-breaking year, catching nearly 195 million fish, but the financial returns were disappointing. Despite the high volume, the ex-vessel value was among the lowest in decades, totaling $541 million. This stark contrast highlights the growing disparity between the quantity of fish caught and the economic benefit to the fishers. Last years catch was even lower, with only 101 million salmon harvested, and the value was also very low. The type of salmon also played a significant role in the value equation, with sockeye salmon being the most valuable despite being only a quarter of the total catch. The trend of shrinking salmon sizes due to climate change remains a concern for the industrys long-term health and value. DNN | The Daily News Now! The world’s first global local news network.
