Why Trump's buying Japanese currency

The US and Japan have confirmed that they jointly intervened last week to halt a slide in the value of the Japanese currency. The Yen had dropped fto a new 40-year low when the US and Japan went on a buying spree designed to stop it from falling further. But why would the United States get involved to help the economy of a trading partner?
