You Can't Hate Someone You're Praying For
"But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 5:44-45).
This is not a suggestion from Jesus. It's a command. It's not optional.
Why does Jesus want his followers to live this way?
The reason is simple. When you're on your knees praying for people, it's impossible to simultaneously hold hatred in your heart for them.
That's why Jesus told us to pray for our enemies. Note what Jesus didn't say to do: Retaliate. Hate. Avenge.
When we pray for our enemies - through the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit - we're able to overcome evil with good. Feel gracious toward them even if they don't deserve it.
It's what Jesus did on the cross. "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34). The Savior of the world prayed for his enemies and persecutors. Until his last breath.
Instead of hating those who've hurt you, pray for them.
You're never more like Jesus when you do.
