Okay. Okay. I can tell you what we're doing. I was trying to hide this, but I guess I'll tell you now. 2:38 You're gonna have to man. It's the only way out. 2:41 Um, we went through cars. 2:46 And that's gonna slow it, so I won't tell you that. 2:50 You went through cars? What does that mean? 2:53 Uh, we checked for the cars that there are a lot of locks. 2:58 We're at. 2:59 Where was that? 3:00 We're at. 3:01 Connor, you could tell there was a bit of a rug pole for detectives here. 3:04 His new story is, I was going through cars. 3:07 Which is plausible because this is something that some teenagers do. 3:11 They go around, grab a handle, the door unlocked, what am I going to find inside? 3:15 Some change, maybe a dollar or two, pack of cigarettes, CDs at that time. 3:20 But you want to know why he lied in the first place. 3:24 Yeah, yeah, yeah. 3:25 It's a murder investigation. 3:26 Don't lie. 3:27 It's a murder investigation. 3:27 There's something interesting said because I know it's against the law. Yeah 3:31 Now Pat, this is a 16 year old kid 3:34 Is he more concerned with what his parents are gonna find out versus what the homicide detectives are gonna find out? 3:41 Who is the one that he fears most because you're a kid am I gonna get grounded because now I'm gonna have to fess up that I was 3:46 Breaking into cars while my friend was was murdered 3:49 The point is this is the second story right that Brian has told and here's Detective John Ganski 3:56 I think with the juvenile sometimes they're reluctant to tell us things that might get 4:02 them in trouble, maybe seems trivial to us, but it's a big thing, you know, to them because 4:08 of the stage they're out in their life, and the reason why they lied about going to the 4:12 movie is because they were doing something, something else, and that something else that 4:18 they were doing is that they were burglarizing or going through cars in the neighborhood 4:23 of whispering cliffs near where Cassie was house-sitting. 4:28 He is an unreliable narrator at this point 4:30 because he is already capable of one lie, 4:32 and police need to, once again, dig into this alibi. 4:36 Could we build the directives to where those cars were? 4:39 I've never seen a long road. 4:42 It went uphill. 4:44 And Tori should build the directives to that one? 4:46 Yes. 4:47 He should be able to actually do that. 4:47 And he's driving. 4:48 I was driving, so I don't know exactly what. 4:51 So, just like the movie, can you tell us any details about the movie? 4:56 Who was in it? 4:57 What was it about? 4:58 Couldn't tell them. 4:59 So they start down the same path. 5:01 Which cars? 5:02 What color were they? 5:03 What streets were they on? 5:04 What did you get? 5:05 What was the make and model? 5:06 Don't know, don't know, don't know, don't know. 5:08 He had no information about the cars he allegedly was breaking into. 5:13 And again, this is about the same time that police believe Cassie was murdered. 5:18 So once his second story kind of falls apart, can't name any of the cars, no 5:23 details again, police really start to close in. And Detective Andy Thomas sort 5:31 of grabs onto this thread now, the car break-in thread. 5:35 The car burglary thing is not happening, okay? 5:38 That's what happened. 5:39 These are the types of situations that you don't lie in. 5:43 Everything else in this world is game. And I'm a firm believer in that. 5:48 I don't give a s***. If you lie in anything else to a cop, whatever, when it comes to a murderer of a beloved friend, you do not lie, okay? 5:59 The second part of that is I want you to take a deep breath, and I want you to think about what part of this that you're involved in. 6:09 Okay, how much of this are you involved in? 6:11 And if you are, that's fine. We can deal with that. 6:14 Fine? 6:14 We can deal with that. 6:16 What? 6:17 You guys are ridiculous. 6:18 We're not being able to kill my friend. 6:20 Why didn't I kill Cassie? 6:22 Did anybody? 6:22 Do you know who did? 6:23 No, I don't know who killed Cassie. 6:25 In the video you can see, Detective Thomas is right in front of him, staring right 6:32 into his eyes, but Brian doesn't break eye contact. 6:35 But now he's been caught into two lies and detectives don't like when you lie 6:40 to them. 6:40 and they offer Brian what they offered Matt. 6:45 Hey, come in, take a polygraph. 6:48 Maybe we can get you out of this. 6:49 Let's clear this up. 6:50 Let's clear this up. 6:51 Brian immediately and enthusiastically says, 6:54 yes, I will come in and I will take a polygraph. 6:57 The confidence just hits a 10. 6:59 It goes right from, 7:01 Sullen, I didn't kill my friend too. 7:03 Absolutely, I will take this polygraph test. 7:05 Let's do it. 7:06 He's ready to clear his name. 7:09 Everybody knows that polygraph test results are inadmissible in court. 7:14 But detectives love them. They love them. 7:17 It's like you said, it's a tool that they can use. 7:20 There's a psychology that they use. 7:22 And they can argue it either way. 7:26 You don't want to take a polygraph? If somebody doesn't want to take it, why don't you want to take it? 7:30 That's odd to me, says the detective. 7:32 Or if you take it and fail it, why'd you fail it? 7:35 What are you lying about? 7:37 Here's what John Gansky said. 7:39 Polygraph tests are controversial at best. 7:43 I think sometimes they can be useful, 7:45 not the actual polygraph itself, 7:48 but the interview process that comes with the polygraph 7:52 and the possibility of your body 7:56 indicating that you're lying. 7:59 A lot of the times we get the truth, 8:00 not from the machine, but from the interview process. 8:06 Our next step with Brian was that he'd given us a story 8:10 and he agrees to a polygraph examination for the next day. 8:16 And that was pretty much the end of the interview 8:18 and his mom, Pam, drove him home. 8:23 This is what she had to say about that whole situation. 8:27 Well, the whole thing worried me. 8:29 I mean, I was, I was worried for my family, I was worried for my parents who were elderly, 8:37 I was worried for my daughter, I was worried about everything at that point, and I was 8:47 extremely worried for Brian because he was so quiet and withdrawn. 8:55 something was definitely telling me that he knew more 9:01 than he was saying. 9:02 He kept telling me he can't believe she's gone. 9:06 He just kept saying, I can't believe she's gone, mom. 9:10 So the Brian that she sent into the room was different 9:15 than the Brian who came out of that room. 9:18 All right, so maybe this is a good time to back up 9:20 and talk a little bit about Brian Draper's family situation, 9:24 his background, and their whole situation. 9:28 Connor, you met with his parents. 9:30 Yeah, I met both Pam and Brian's dad, Carrie, 9:35 when I was in Idaho. 9:36 And, you know, they are hardworking small town residents, 9:42 you know, trying to raise their kids. 9:43 Brian was actually adopted. 9:45 They had a difficult time getting pregnant, 9:47 so how they saw it, he was a blessing, 9:51 because they weren't sure 9:52 if they were ever gonna be able to have children, 9:53 and then they're able to adopt him. 9:54 His biological mother was quite young, 9:56 so they adopted him as a baby 9:58 and raised him as their son. 10:02 Here's his dad, Carrie. 10:04 Brian is very talented. 10:07 In many ways, he flew through his education 10:11 as an A student without trying. 10:15 He was a musician from early on, 10:17 playing the piano. 10:19 He'll find his room where he had a drum set. 10:21 that, yeah, he was down in that room, pounded on the drums and playing the, we loved it. 10:30 In my mind, Brian was the perfect son. 10:35 So when this came up, they were just blindsided by their son who seemingly perfect all the 10:42 way up to age 16 is now being questioned by police. 10:45 Like none of this tracks. 10:47 This doesn't make sense. 10:50 So, Brian leaves, agrees to come back and take a polygraph, but meanwhile, police are 10:54 still investigating. 10:56 They're not just waiting for Brian to take his polygraph. 11:00 And that investigation rightly centered on Pocatello High School because you've got Tori 11:04 Adamczyk, Brian Draper, Cassie and Matt. 11:07 All of them are students. 11:09 Where would you go to find out more information about students than the high school? 11:13 So the students told us there were police in the hallways, police in the vice principal's 11:18 office. You know, imagine how disruptive this is in a high school. And despite the fact 11:24 that Matt had passed his polygraph by now, there were rumors. 11:28 This is Danny Dixon, a former Pocatello high school student. 11:32 Yeah. I remember initially how crazy it was. I remember everyone crying. There was counselors 11:37 swarming the hallways. Just, yeah, everyone holding on. It felt like to each other 11:45 a little tighter, and so everyone was like, 11:48 oh, Cassie's boyfriend, he was there, 11:51 and he was her boyfriend. 11:52 And so you've seen a lot of crime movies. 11:55 I think people just thought, oh yeah, 11:57 like he probably did that. 11:58 And this is frustrating for investigators 12:01 because nobody knows that they had already talked to Matt 12:04 and they had cleared him of any connection 12:08 to the homicide, yet they go into the hallways 12:11 of Pocatello and everyone points the finger, 12:14 It's the boyfriend right with no other basis other than well 12:18 I've seen a lot of movies and you know how things unfold and crime documentaries 12:22 It's always gonna be the boyfriend in the end. So it's a frustrating setback 12:25 They're not progressing very much and in the investigation at school. All they have right now is 12:32 Brian Draper we need to follow up with his story and see what happens with his polygraph test 12:39 The following day he comes back to the police station 12:41 But this time he's not alone, doesn't have a lawyer, but he does have his mom and his dad Pam and Kerry are there by his side 12:50 He sets up to take a polygraph. He's ready 12:54 Clear his name like he said, but that is not what happened 13:03 Brian was in the interrogation room nervous scared and he wanted to talk to police 13:12 In the police interview, you can see Brian in the center of frame carry just to his right 13:22 in PAM with Detective Ganski and Thomas. Everyone is looking at Brian. What is he about to say? 13:31 He's highly emotional. It's about to explode out of him. 13:36 Hey, I'm running out to drop off a stack of letters and packages. It is another major turning point here. He 15:30 says that they doubled back and came back inside the house. They had no plans of 15:36 actually leaving. They just wanted to convince Cassie and Matt that they were 15:40 going to see a movie. That was never the plan. They come in to the basement 15:44 where they had been earlier that night and they had unlocked the door you remember they were down the basement playing with the 15:50 Wait machine when they did that it took that opportunity to unlock the basement door knowing that they were going to come back later and 15:59 That's part of the explanation of why the lights were going out Brian explains that 16:08 We went there 16:09 When Matt was still here and we went, we turned our heads off and scaring. 16:19 Okay, so was your intent to do those lights to get him to come downstairs? 16:22 Yes. 16:23 Okay, so you thought he was going to jump out? 16:25 Yes. 16:25 A little bit. 16:26 Part of this confession, the sobbing, the stuttering, the stammering, it's hard to get 16:33 what he's saying piecing together. 16:35 He can barely get it out. 16:37 Get the words out. 16:38 But he just said we were just trying to scare them, okay, so what he's suggesting is a plan 16:46 Yeah, he also goes on to tell police that to lure them down into the basement 16:53 They had smashed an ashtray and if you remember from episode one 16:58 There was this glass that was at the bottom of the staircase 17:01 They couldn't really figure out why it was there 17:03 There was no windows broken and there were no windows anywhere near this part of the basement 17:09 But they'd turn the lights off off and on they'd smash the glass and attempt to scare them as we talked in episode 1 17:17 When Matt was describing this 17:20 Cassie Matt and the dog are at the top of the stairs. They're looking down into a pitch-black basement 17:26 Now we know it was Brian and Tori and keep in mind 17:31 And Brian's parents are sitting right next to him. 17:35 This is all brand new to them. 17:37 This is brand new to everybody in that room. 17:39 Remember, they thought, oh, we're coming in for a polygraph. 17:41 He's going to, he's maybe hiding something, but we'll be gone in a couple hours. 17:45 This is, they're sitting here in real time, listening to this plot unfold. 17:51 And here, we're going to have to see what kind of mask it is, how are we, yeah, how 17:59 are we going to use it. 17:59 He just says they put on Halloween masks. 18:03 I mean, is it from the show, Halibut? 18:06 No, no, they're white and then we paid. 18:08 I had my result black and stuff because of red, all of it. 18:14 You can see Pam in the video, heighten up. 18:17 Yeah, she recoils. 18:18 She puts her hand up to her face, almost hiding, shocked. 18:22 Again, like, where is this going? 18:25 This is not a story he told me when I was at home with them all weekend. 18:28 or after the first police interview. 18:31 You had a few asks with the guys of course. 18:36 Let's take a step back and remember Brian's first interview early on. 18:42 They're just getting to know each other. 18:43 What do you like? 18:44 Movies. 18:45 What kind of movies? 18:46 Horror movies. 18:47 What kind of horror movies? 18:48 Slasher. 18:48 Slasher movies. 18:50 Cut to him in the confession saying, 18:52 we don't masks, we carried knives, we went up to scare her. 18:56 He then explains that he and Tori waited in the basement until they heard Matt's mom come and pick Matt up and 19:04 Leave so now they know that Cassie is alone in the house and this is when they make their move 19:11 Brian and Tori walk up the stairs knives in hand masks on face 19:15 Reach the top of the stairs 19:18 Cassie is in the living room 20 feet away. She turns she sees the two of them 19:23 what Brian is saying was that 19:26 That's where it was going to end. 20:16 On October 19th, 2025, The Love became the backdrop of something straight out of a heist 20:23 movie. 20:24 movie. Now, nearly a year out, there are still critical questions to be answered. We're used 20:29 to following heists in movies from the perspectives of the ever-so-glamorous and dangerous perpetrators, 20:35 but when it happens in real life, the lines between good and bad guys aren't so clear. 20:41 And even less clear is the fate of those French crown jewels. In this series, I'll 20:47 take you inside the events of that day like you've never heard them before, through 20:51 the eyes of the people who lived them. I'll follow the investigation into how this could 20:56 have happened, who could have been behind it, and then I'll join the international hunt 21:02 for the Louvre Joules. 21:04 Heist at the Louvre, a new series from ABC Audio. At any time you're not going to be able to show them on your mind. 23:05 When watching the police interview, Brian's dad, Cary, is in the corner of the room. 23:11 He's trapped. He cannot move and you see him gripping his son's shoulder. You see 23:19 him tightening himself up, he is stuck in the worst possible place he could imagine. 23:26 I think at that point in time to a certain extent, I had checked out. 23:34 I really say that because I don't, I think I was just going through the motions. 23:40 I think I stopped thinking. 23:42 I felt like I was watching a movie, somebody else's life. 23:46 I knew he was toast. 23:49 I knew I lost my son. 23:52 I knew it. 23:53 The cameras are still rolling even though the confession is over. 23:58 And the cameras capture a very personal moment with this family 24:04 in this time of extreme stress. 24:09 Pam, Carrie, and Brian sort of lock together and embrace. 24:14 and Pam says something to Brian you are an incredible boy an incredible boy I 24:31 talked to her about that moment in particular and she said even after 24:40 hearing that he had been a part of this crime he's still my boy you know you 24:46 you never stop being a parent. 24:50 Then when we went back in the room 24:54 and I said the first question he asked is 24:56 can I go back to school? 25:02 And then before when they were leaving, 25:06 I believe is when I hugged him and told him 25:10 that he was an amazing boy and I was, 25:15 it sounds weird, but that's the son I raised. 25:21 The one who even though he was naive 25:24 about the finality and what was gonna happen he still went in and told the 25:29 truth and he's still my son and that was that never changes he will always be my 25:42 son. This may be controversial and there are a lot of people out there that 25:47 certainly do not want to hear mother calling Brian Draper incredible minutes 25:51 after he confessed to participating in Cassie's death but she felt in that 25:55 moment she needed to do something because of what he had just done and he as 26:02 Kerry said had no idea of what was coming for him and they felt like they 26:07 just needed to take a break and just be parents for their only son regardless 26:12 of what just happened. Sure that's her take. Incredible's not the word I would use. 26:17 I wouldn't use that word but they're in a highly unique situation and they're 26:23 making this up as they go. 26:24 No one's prepared for this. 26:26 I think what you said is on the money 26:30 and it's understandable that she would do this, 26:32 but I think people watching and Cassie's family 26:35 might not think that Brian Draper is an incredible boy. 26:40 There's one other very strange moment 26:45 captured by the cameras that was outside of the interrogation. 26:49 So Pam and Kerry were not in the room. 26:52 the detectives were not in the room. 26:54 Brian's alone, the cameras are rolling, 26:57 and he starts talking to himself, 26:59 but he's also talking to Cassie. 27:00 He addresses Cassie as if she's still alive. 27:32 I will protect you Cassie. 27:42 I would have stopped him. 27:44 I wanted to be your boyfriend. 27:46 He's talking as if she's still alive. 27:50 He's center frame the cameras on him. Do you think he's aware that the camera is rolling? 27:56 Well, that's the $64,000 question either. He's had some sort of weird psychotic break where 28:04 he's talking to her as if she's alive. I would stop him. I want to be your boyfriend. Either 28:10 that's the case or he knows those cameras are still on and is sort of constructing a I 28:17 I would have stopped him, you know, again, Tori did it. 28:25 Did this kid in the moment come up with this like scheme 28:29 to sort of look, look, I'm apologizing to her. 28:32 I wanted to be your boyfriend 28:33 or is he really just broken brain syndrome? 28:37 That's the part that works against his story. 28:39 I want to be your boyfriend. 28:41 This is a different context. 28:43 Yeah. 28:44 He clearly had a liking. 28:46 He had a crush on, I would say, 28:49 from what he just said. 28:50 He said it. 28:51 I had a crush on you, Cassie. 28:54 If you have a crush on a girl, 28:55 do you put on a mask and wheel a knife 28:57 and go upstairs and terrorize her? 28:59 No. 29:00 That doesn't track with someone 29:01 who has a teenage crush on a girl. 29:04 So for Brian, he confesses, 29:07 they have a version of events 29:10 that closely coincide with the crime scene 29:14 of how she died. 29:15 But there are so many details between that. 29:18 We had Brian's word a person who's been caught lying not once twice unreliable narrator 29:24 He's closer to the truth. They said okay, Brian 29:26 We have your confession. You're putting it all on Tori now. We need the evidence that matches your story 29:35 The knives the mask where is it because remember nothing was found at the crime scene and 29:42 Then Brian agrees. Okay. I'll take you to Black Rock Canyon where everything is 29:52 Now, Black Rock Canyon, when we were making the documentary, 29:57 Screamurder, True Teen Horror Story, 29:59 we went out there with Detective Ganski 30:01 and saw this area, you know, we were talking before 30:05 about how Pocatello's kind of isolated. 30:07 This is a good example of it. 30:09 It's only 10, 15 minutes maybe outside of town, 30:12 but you think you could be on the moon. 30:15 It's pitch black at night, no one's gonna be out there, 30:18 but you can still hear the traffic from a distance. 30:22 You're not that far away. 30:23 So you can go out there in 10 minutes, 30:25 do what you wanna do and be back in town 30:27 and no one would notice. 30:28 So what Brian said about BlackRock was that 30:31 after they had killed Cassie, 30:34 they drove out there and buried this evidence out there. 30:38 So this is where Brian, after his confession, 30:42 leads police out there and he locates, 30:45 It's even in the dark, the area where they had buried everything, and they start pulling 30:51 out exactly what Brian said they would find there. 30:54 The black clothes, the masks that they wore. 30:59 These masks were clearly homemade, paper mache, and then they designed them themselves. 31:06 They sprinkled paint down, bloody smears that were coming down, for maximum effort to 31:13 terrified Cassie seemingly seconds before she was murdered and then they 31:20 pull the knives out of the hole and and these what we've been told from the 31:24 autopsy report was one of them was a serrated knife that doesn't do it 31:29 justice these were 10 to 12 inch long daggers hunting knives almost if you 31:36 recall the Rambo knife is sort of a moniker for this so clearly this horror 31:42 movie theme is something that's on their minds and we'll see in later episodes that it's it comes 31:50 really to the forefront in a way that nobody could have predicted when this all started. 31:55 The other thing they found in this whole of evidence was something that Brian had never 32:00 mentioned and it wasn't a murder weapon and it wasn't something they wore there. It was a tape, 32:07 A videotape. 32:08 A tape? 32:10 Yeah, what's that doing there? 32:11 I mean, what is that doing there? 32:12 And it looked like someone had tried to damage it, 32:15 set it on fire. 32:17 Maybe that's why Brian never mentioned it, 32:21 but he knew that it was in that cache 32:23 with everything else. 32:25 So you think he didn't mention it 32:26 because he thought, oh, it's so badly damaged, 32:28 they'll never get anything off of it? 32:29 Destroyed. 32:30 Everybody at the police station, 32:33 all investigators involved were quickly notified. 32:35 Guys, there's a tape, and our technician's been able to recover the footage that's on that tape. 32:43 Everyone is brought into a single room. Everyone's going to watch it at the same time. 32:47 No one knows what they're about to watch, and are they about to watch something that they are going to regret? 32:52 When I sat down with John Ganski, and we got to the moment of the tape discovery, 32:58 I could see him reliving this 20 years ago that this was a going to be a defining moment 33:05 for him. 33:08 So we get a call that they got the videotape, they fixed it, looks like they'll be able 33:13 to play it. 33:14 They're in the conference room, Andy and I arrived about the same time. 33:18 We walk in and you can hear a pin drop in the room because nobody in the room knows 33:24 what we're about to see. 33:26 Are you prepared to see what you're going to see? 33:28 There was so much tension as they're waiting for the technician to hit play. 33:37 Opening shot is the camera in the hallways of Pocatello High School. 33:43 Kids are moving around, they're going to lockers, they're getting stuff. 33:47 It appears that Brian is doing most of the camera work. 33:53 Now what's strange about this tape is that it jumps around 33:57 Because it's out of order, it's happening on multiple days, we're in March of 2006 34:02 and then we jump to September 21st, the day before Cassie is killed. 34:08 But early on, something happens that catches everyone's breath in that police room when they're watching it. 34:17 It's a shot of the camera, POV, Brian holding it, walking down the hallway, 34:24 which is almost empty. You see a student off in the distance in a row of lockers. 34:34 As you get closer you realize it's Cassie. Ryan spins around puts the camera on her 34:46 says. 34:47 Hello, Cassie. 34:51 I'm getting you on tape, OK? 34:54 Say hi, please. 34:55 Hi. 34:56 OK, see ya. 34:58 Wait. 34:59 Have you seen Tori? 35:02 He's supposed to be here at 7.30. 35:04 And it's 8.19. 35:07 He's an hour late. 35:10 You don't even care, do you? 35:14 OK, see ya. 35:15 When you look at the timestamp, it's September 22nd. 35:20 This is the day that they killed her. 35:22 He approaches her on tape in the hallways of Pocatello High School. 35:28 Certainly a huge shock for anybody that's watching this.
