THE GREAT GONDOLPHO and MURDER BY MOONLITE THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES

Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce take us on another great Sherlock Holmes Adventure sponsored by Petri Wines. "The Great Gandolfo" is an episode of The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes radio series, which aired on October 22, 1945, starring Basil Rathbone as Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. It was written by Anthony Boucher and Denis Green, and while not an original Arthur Conan Doyle story, it was inspired by "The Adventure of the Second Stain" (1904). Summary: The Setup: The episode, sponsored by Petri Wine, begins with Dr. Watson sharing a tale of a case involving a "great" figure, though not in the way one might expect. The Case: Holmes and Watson are involved in a mystery centered on a character named "The Great Gandolfo". Plotline: The narrative involves a tense situation revolving around a missing item, drawing thematic inspiration from "The Adventure of the Second Stain," where a missing document threatens national security. The plot, characteristic of the series, is fast-paced, involving wit and, at times, more humorous elements than the original canon. Context: The show was a popular wartime radio drama, featuring the classic duo of a high-strung Holmes and a genial Watson, with original narrations and commercials. The episode is part of the 6th season of the series' run on the Mutual Network.
