Sent by the King
In Mark 6:7–13, Jesus sends the twelve apostles under His authority to proclaim repentance, depend upon God's provision, and demonstrate the advancing power of His kingdom. Their mission reminds the church that ministry begins with Christ, belongs to Christ, and depends upon Christ. Though the apostles exercised a unique and foundational authority, Christ still sends His church into the world through the ordinary means of grace and the faithful proclamation of His Word. Christians are called to trust God rather than human resources, remain faithful when the gospel is rejected, call sinners to repentance and faith, and care compassionately for those who suffer. Ultimately, the passage points beyond the apostles to Jesus Christ Himself, the great Sent One of the Father, who defeated sin, Satan, and death through His cross and resurrection. The mission, message, authority, power, provision, and results all belong to Christ.
