Eva Benefield on Surviving the Black Swan Murder, Losing Both Parents, and Turning Trauma Into Resilience

In this episode of TSFS, I talk with Eva Benefield, who I found on TikTok and who has been outspoken about losing her mom at 14 to a heart condition and then, within five years, losing her dad Doug after he married Ashley Benefield, who later shot and killed him in 2020. Eva shares why she wrote her book, Ghost Girl: Girl Surviving the Black Swan Murder, how writing became therapeutic, and why she wants any future adaptation to be positive rather than a typical documentary. We walk through the day she found her mother, the rapid marriage to Ashley, escalating red flags, and Ashley and her mother’s allegations against Doug. Eva explains learning of her dad’s death, the shock and survival mode afterward, testifying at trial, and her view that justice was served with Ashley’s 20-year sentence. We also discuss optimism, neuroscience, exercise, faith, therapy, anxious attachment, and the message of resilience and gratitude.
