He Smuggled Cocaine Inside His Body—Then He Fought in the UFC
Former top-10 UFC middleweight Ian Heinisch joins the Honor Among Thieves Podcast to reveal how a gifted wrestler became an ecstasy trafficker and international fugitive. After being arrested during an undercover drug sting at 19, Ian posted bail, obtained a passport and fled the United States for Europe. While living in Spain, addiction and homelessness led Ian into international cocaine smuggling. He recounts swallowing approximately one kilo of wrapped cocaine at a time, transporting it from Colombia to Spain and eventually being caught after an airport X-ray. Ian served roughly two and a half years in Spanish prison before returning to the United States and being incarcerated at Rikers Island. Ian explains how prison, faith, sobriety and wrestling helped him rebuild his life and reach the UFC’s top 10. He also discusses opioid addiction, the brain injury that ended his fighting career and his current work in addiction recovery and combat sports.
