This Grammy-winning singer-songwriter made a lasting impact on the music scene with her poignant debut album, released in 1988, which catapulted her to fame after a memorable performance at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute concert. The self-titled album went on to become a massive commercial success, earning six Grammy nominations and winning three prestigious awards, including Best New Artist and Best Contemporary Folk Album. The album's enduring legacy was cemented in 2025 when it was preserved in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress.
